A fire burning out of control near Bonny Doon has consumed roughly 2,300 acres and prompted evacuations for hundreds of Santa Cruz County residents. Authorities were expanding the boundaries of those evacuations at noon on Thursday.

Authorities ordered residents from their homes along Pine Flat Road, Empire Grade Road, Alba Road, Last Chance Road, Swanton Road, Swanton View Road, Mill Creek Road, Rancho del Oso and Warnella Truck Trail.

More than 300 firefighters are battling the blaze. Three strike teams have been called in from San Mateo County, including an engine from Half Moon Bay that deployed shortly after the fire started Wednesday evening.

Coastside Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Paul Cole is among firefighters defending homes in the Bonny Doon area. He and his team are on a 24-hour shift that began at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

From his cell phone at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Cole said the fire shows no sign of stopping any time soon.

“This is gonna go for a while,” Cole said. “This is not something that’s going to be out any time soon. We’ll have resources committed from Coastside for a while, until the structure protection and structure threat has been mitigated.”

CalFire crews have worked the fire through the night and are ordering equipment including aircraft and bulldozers to use in fighting the fire. CalFire reports that 250 homes and 25 businesses are threatened by the fire as of noon Thursday.

A CalFire spokesman said no deaths or serious injuries have been reported, and no buildings have been burnt or damaged.

Linking it back to tradition

For most people teeing off on the first hole of the Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Links, over-hitting a shot wouldn’t have been too much of a concern. Bunkers aside, the casual golfer would have smiled, assured that their errant shot would be slowed and eventually stopped by a lush playing surface.
