Coroner identifies 16-year-old car crash victim

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Aug 05, 2009 - 01:30:39 pm PDT

Authorities say the 16-year-old who died in a head-on car crash in San Gregorio last month was Kyle Tseng of Millbrae.

Tseng died in an explosive collision that took place at night on July 26 on Highway 84, said San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault. Tseng was driving a BMW sedan westbound when the car crossed over the double yellow lines while coming out of a turn and smashed into a Hummer going eastbound.

The cause of Tseng’s death remains under investigation. Foucrault said it’s unclear whether Tseng died as a result of the impact or the ensuing fire.

Tseng’s sole passenger, a 16-year-old boy from Hillsborough, was taken to Stanford Medical Center along with the driver of the Hummer, a 57-year-old woman from Woodside.

Foucrault said a California Highway Patrol officer told him the BMW was traveling “100 plus” miles per hour. A CHP spokeswoman said the speeds of both cars are being investigated.

Results of toxicology reports are also pending for the people involved. Foucrault said those results should be available in roughly two weeks.
