Final juvenile honor camp escapee caught

Friday morning, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputies caught the last escapee who was part of a small group of teenage boys that walked away from the Camp Glenwood juvenile detention facility in La Honda earlier this month.

The four boys ditched the honor camp Sunday, July 12. One by one, Sheriff’s deputies found and caught each boy near their respective neighborhoods.

Ken Pesso, county Sheriff’s Office deputy chief of juvenile institutions and juvenile probations, said the last of the four boys was apprehended at about 6:30 a.m. at a home in Menlo Park.

“In general terms, (juveniles) remain in the area of where they resided or had contacts, which would be to some extend indicative of what kids do,” Pesso said. “Whereas adults tend to leave the state or area, juveniles tend to stay in the area they’re familiar with.”

“I think if they were more violent or involved in criminal activity they’d be harder to find,” added Pesso, noting that none of the boys resisted arrest or were caught with contraband.

The Sheriff’s Office can’t release the names or offenses of the escapees because they are minors. All four are being held at Hillcrest Youth Services Center in unincorporated San Mateo, and now face charges of “escape from youth authority.”
