County rescue teams are searching for a 55-year-old hiker who went missing on Thursday night after taking a nature walk at Skeggs Point off Skyline Boulevard.

Officials say the missing hiker, identified as Douglas John May of San Carlos, could be lost or injured somewhere in the wilderness.

A family member alerted county emergency officials after May didn’t return for hours after leaving for the hike. An officer dipatched to Skegg's Point could not locate May but did find his car still at the trailhead parking lot. The Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Emergency Services began a more widescale search around 1 a.m. today, which included K-9 search units, horse-mounted deputies and air support.

Douglas John May, 55, of San Carlos has been missing at Skeggs Point off Skyline Boulevard since late Thursday afternoon.

Located just south of Kings Mountain, Skeggs Point is a scenic lookout area maintained by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.

Anyone with information about May whereabouts is asked to call Detective Marcus Gathright at 363-7823.
