Stimulus work may damage trees

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Jul 01, 2009 - 03:15:50 pm PDT

What you see in the photo is our stimulus money at work. It is perhaps unavoidable, but the roots of many of the trees along Main Street have been severely compromised as a result of the storm drain project.

The roots, including the large feeders, have been cut so close to the trunk it is doubtful these trees will survive the onslaught. When I asked the workers about it, the response was that planting these trees in these places was a bad idea to begin with because road and sidewalk repairs like these would eventually be necessary.

I am not an arborist, but it seems unlikely these trees will survive this drastic root pruning.
