Local Oaxacan community plans celebration

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Jul 01, 2009 - 03:15:50 pm PDT

Local residents who hail from Oaxaca, Mexico, are planning quite a fiesta for the afternoon of July 25.

Father and son, Luis and Hugo Maya said it all starts with a noon Mass at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church on Kelly Street and continues into the night at the nearby Bell Building. The Mayas promise free food and music for all.

The Mayas say the event has greatly expanded this year and is based on a similar celebration of the Oaxacan culture that has been held in Santa Cruz for years.

There are quite a few former Oaxacan residents now living on the coast. The Mayas say they followed the grand tradition of immigrants everywhere; word of mouth spreads and friends and family follow.
