Gardeners lend hands at Quarry Park

Published/Last Modified on Tuesday, Jun 30, 2009 - 03:39:32 pm PDT

A group of green thumbs, armed with work gloves, hoes, shovels and wheelbarrows, gathered inside the main gate at Quarry Park Sunday morning to start building their community garden.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., between 20 and 30 Coastsiders dropped by the site to lend a hand in crafting and installing a series of redwood planters, filling them with dirt, and giving birth to two human-sized scarecrows to ward off peckish birds.

It’s one of the first steps in preparing the area for a full-fledged vegetable garden.

El Granada resident and member of Friends of Quarry Park Len Erickson says it’s uplifting to see residents taking ownership of their community open space.

“People really connect with a park when there’s a piece they get to build and have as their own … The group working on the community garden is a whole new set of people putting their stamp on the park. It’s a whole influx of new energy,” Erickson said.

Planting will commence this summer after workers install an irrigation system.

The Quarry Park group has scheduled several community work days at the garden; the next runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
