A middle-aged man from Palo Alto drove his car off an embankment on Highway 92 near Lombardi Springs Sunday evening, according to a San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office press release. Sheriff’s deputies consider the incident, which closed the road for more than four hours, an attempted suicide.

At about 8:40 p.m., deputies arrived at the scene and found the man, “who had apparently climbed up the embankment after driving his vehicle off the edge,” the release states. An emergency medical team transported the man to a local hospital for examination and treatment. Deputies spotted the man’s car about 300 feet down the embankment; a Sheriff’s cliff rescue unit assessed the car and concluded there were no other victims.

The man was placed on a psychiatric hold, based on the deputies’ observations at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sheriff’s Detective Hector Acosta at (650) 363-4064

Little hands doing big work

Amid crates of bananas and barrels of canned food, five children stood eagerly in the shadow of a Pillar Point Harbor warehouse as they waited for vegetables and fruits to be unloaded before they could lend a tiny hand or two to Coastside Hope’s Second Harvest Food Drive.
