Puente gets grant to continue parent, child services

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Jun 24, 2009 - 01:05:10 pm PDT

Safety-net service provider Puente de la Costa Sur was awarded a $95,000 grant from the county last week to bolster parent and child services on the South Coast.

This is the fourth consecutive year Puente is receiving the grant; it funds workshops and home visits that help parents measure, track and improve their children’s mental and emotional growth and their own progress as parents.

“It helps parents know what’s in the range of appropriate development and everything they need to know to care for a child, in terms of expectations related to school, how to read to your child, (and) how to help with problems in schools,” said Puente Executive Director Kerry Lobel. “No one is given a handbook on parenting; we recognize that.”

The grant money also supports mental health counseling at South Coast schools — a service overseen by Puente, and training for school educators and administrators relating to child abuse prevention services.

Improvements in individual or family functioning were reported at 55 percent for children attending four or more service sessions in the 2008-2009 fiscal year, according to Puente figures. Puente is aiming to increase that to 60 percent by the end of the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

Little hands doing big work

Amid crates of bananas and barrels of canned food, five children stood eagerly in the shadow of a Pillar Point Harbor warehouse as they waited for vegetables and fruits to be unloaded before they could lend a tiny hand or two to Coastside Hope’s Second Harvest Food Drive.
