| Surfer saved off Miramar coast By Greg Thomas [ greg@hmbreview.com ] Published/Last Modified on Thursday, June 11, 2009 3:30 PM PDT A group of Coastside rescue authorities gathered on the bluffs above Surfer’s Beach Thursday afternoon and watched a patrol boat from Pillar Point Harbor speed back and forth, looking for a distressed surfer in the breakers. Before they could lend assistance, a fellow surfer on the beach paddled out and helped the surfer in need, according to the Harbor office. State Parks aquatic ranger Tim Fellars arrived on the scene along with a CalFire crew from Coastside Fire Protection District at about 2:40 p.m. They received the call about 10 minutes prior, Fellars said. “There’s a good south summer swell running right now,” said Fellars, scanning the water with binoculars. “It’s not as powerful as the winter north swell, but it’s enough to create rip currents that endanger people.” Fellars speculated that the surfer in jeopardy was probably inexperienced and needed a little help getting back to shore. |
