Cuts could close most state parks

Nearly every state park and beach on the San Mateo Coastside could be shuttered under a proposed money-saving plan released by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s office Friday morning.

The drastic $70 million budget cut would close every state park and beach in San Mateo County for the coming fiscal year except Pacifica State Beach, San Bruno Mountain State Park and Pigeon Point lighthouse.

The current proposal would close local state beaches and parks including Half Moon Bay, Montara, Pescadero, Gray Whale Cove, San Gregorio, Portola Redwoods, Butano, Año Nuevo and the Point Montara lighthouse. Under the plan, the parks would close on July 1, just days before the peak summer camping season begins.

The plan would leave only 59 state parks open in California.
