Coastside beaches get failing safety score

An independent “report card” rating the cleanliness and safety of California beaches has given failing grades to two Coastside ocean spots during wet conditions.

Pillar Point Harbor and Venice Beach at Frenchmans Creek both received the lowest grades for cleanliness during wet-weather conditions, according to Heal the Bay, an environmental nonprofit focused on improving coastal water quality.

The beach report notes that the study is based on weekly samples of fecal bacteria found in the coastal waters. The study points out that beaches that are given a low grade present a hazard for beachgoers.

“The lower the grade, the greater the health risk,” the report notes. “Potential illnesses include stomach flu, ear infection, upper respiratory infection and major skin rash.”

The two Coastside beaches singled out in the study received failing grades only for wet-weather conditions. For dry-weather conditions, the report gave near-perfect scores for San Mateo County beaches.
