Half Moon Bay High School parents are celebrating a successful fundraising effort that saved five class sections for the 2009-2010 school year.

In about a month, high school parents raised $78,000 through the Cabrillo Education Foundation to help bring back class sections lost this year due to school cutbacks.

The fundraising effort stemmed from parent concerns that school cuts and the loss of 13 class sections were hindering students’ academic options. School officials said restoring all the lost classes would cost $195,000, but they encouraged parents to try and help raise money to help.

High school principal Mary Streshly says that the sum raised by parents will bring back class sections for P.E., Spanish, science, art, and possibly marine biology. Streshly said that the classes being restored were tentative and could change.

Parents and school officials planned to meet at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Blue Sky Café to celebrate the successful fundraising drive.
