Jet Ski regulations take effect

New regulations for the use of personal watercraft took effect Monday.

The regulations do two things. First, they expand the definition of “motorized personal watercraft” to include modern Jet Ski-type craft in restrictions in four designated offshore zones around harbors at Pillar Point, Santa Cruz, Moss Landing and Monterey. Second, they establish a new fifth zone around Mavericks for seasonal, conditional use “only when the National Weather Service-issued High Surf Warning is in effect for the San Mateo County and only during December, January and February,” said Mary Jane Schramm, a spokeswoman for the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.

Officials at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Surfrider Foundation collaborated in creating the new regulations, which were approved in November.
