Authorities retrieved a man's body from the waters just beyond shore break at Poplar Beach Sunday afternoon, according to Half Moon Bay Police Capt. Michael O’Malley.

At about 1:20 p.m., Half Moon Bay police officers received a report from beachgoers who said they saw a body in a wetsuit floating not far from the beach. Officers, firefighters and a rescue swimmer from State Parks arrived on the scene within minutes; the swimmer retrieved the body.

After trying to perform CPR, Half Moon Bay police pronounced the man dead.

O’Malley noted kite surfing equipment left unattended on the beach and a strong riptide in the waters nearby. The man was from Santa Clara, according to unconfirmed media reports.

“We’re thinking he may have gone out to clean the sand off his wetsuit or something and got pulled out to sea,” O’Malley said Monday morning. “That’s just an assumption right now.”

O’Malley said the man was approximately 30 years old. Police are waiting on word of the man’s identity from the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office. Calls to the Coroner's Office Monday morning haven't been returned at this writing.
