Born March 16, 1931 in Sao Jorge, Azores. She moved to Half Moon Bay in March of 1971 with her husband Manuel and four children.

She passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 77 on February 20, 2009 after a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years who passed away recently and is also preceded in death by her parents and four siblings. She is survived by her daughters Alice Dias and Argilda Oliveira; sons Joe Parreira and Cesar Parreira; son-in-law Tony Dias; daughter-in-laws Oswalda Parreira and Cindy Parreira; grandchildren Alvaro Dias, Alcidia Dias, Debbie & Eugenio Azevedo, Brenda Parreira, and Brandon Parreira; and great grandchildren Ashley and Kevyn Azevedo. She is also survived by one sister in Salida, CA and two brothers in Sao Jorge, Azores along with several nieces and nephews.

She loved gardening, sewing, attending Portuguese Festas and spending time with her family. She was also an avid church goer and was a member of the Religion de Maria. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

A Rosary will be held at Our Lady of the Pillar Church on Thursday, February 26th at 7:00PM and Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 27th at 1:00PM at Our Lady of the Pillar Church followed by the burial at Our Lady of the Pillar Cemetery.

On a mission


The night air was chilly and the low-slanted roof reflected the dim lights over the 13 adults bundled in heavy coats and thick knitted scarves. Some held sleeping babies or squirming toddlers. One little boy scampered impishly under the table, but the adults’ attention was fixed on their neighbor, Irma Hernandez, leading a discussion about right and wrong.
