Police say Fremont teens rifled 34 lockers

Police say four teenagers broke into 34 lockers Monday night at Half Moon Bay High School, scrounging through students' personal belongings looking for money or valuables to steal.

The four teens drove to Half Moon Bay from Fremont, and were spotted earlier in the evening driving a Chevy Cavalier and acting suspiciously in the Strawflower Village parking lot, according to police.

Around midnight, a police officer on patrol spotted the car again at the high school parking lot. Going into the school quad, police saw dozens of lockers pried open and books and personal items scattered across the ground. Seeing the officers, the burglars ran into the open fields next to the school.

Police, working with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, captured one of the four suspected burglars at a Chevron gas station at Main Street and Highway 1.

Police say they are still questioning the arrested teenager, identified as 19-year-old Emmanuel Dadzie of Fremont.

Dadzie reportedly told police that he came to Half Moon Bay with a 17-year-old friend who once went to Half Moon Bay High School.

Police are still determining what items were stolen from the lockers.

"This is still under investigation," said Police Capt. Michael O'Malley. "We're taking statements from students to see what contents are lost from their lockers. It's going to take time to get more on this."

On a mission

The night air was chilly and the low-slanted roof reflected the dim lights over the 13 adults bundled in heavy coats and thick knitted scarves. Some held sleeping babies or squirming toddlers. One little boy scampered impishly under the table, but the adults’ attention was fixed on their neighbor, Irma Hernandez, leading a discussion about right and wrong.
