Mavericks goes green

Aside from adjusting the traffic plan for this year’s Mavericks Surf Contest, organizers are looking into ways to minimize the carbon footprints of fans on the sand.

Purchasing carbon offsets helped neutralize the environmental impact of an estimated 50,000 fans at last year’s event, but this year Mavericks Surf Ventures CEO Keir Beadling says his team of coordinators can do more. Along with setting up compost and recycling bins, “we will have our Clif Bar green team onsite educating the public about waste management, environmental responsibility, etc. And we’re currently evaluating the viability of using solar power for land-based contest operations.”

Also, Beadling added, “we’ll use biodiesel to power all television equipment and any electrical equipment on the beach.”

The new practices, Beadling said, are “consistent with our core values of courage, respect, authenticity and integrity, and we hope that Mavericks fans all over the world will take a similar approach and consider what they can do to minimize their own carbon footprint.”
