Very few toys for tots

Published/Last Modified on Thursday, Dec 18, 2008 - 03:15:29 pm PST

Toys For Tots, a three-month nationwide holiday toy drive, is faring worse than usual this year, even though more businesses have opened their doors to donations.

“We’re really hurting,” said Timothy Anthamatten, Toys For Tots coordinator for San Mateo, San Francisco and Marin counties. “And we’ve gotten more requests for toys than we usually do.”

Usually, Anthamatten said, he’s able to hand out one toy to each of about 70,000 needy children. This year, however, the need has increased to 90,000 and donors aren’t keeping up.

Patty Pastorino, who manages Tutti Fiori on Highway 92 in Half Moon Bay, volunteered the flower shop as a drop-off point for toys. She’s received four toys in all but hasn’t seen a single one in three weeks.

“I was expecting a better turnout,” she said. “And I realize times are tough for everybody, but I’d like to be able to give at least one full box of toys.”

Today is the last day to donate.
