Disaster crop insurance deadlines draw near

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Nov 26, 2008 - 01:36:13 pm PST

Deadlines for San Mateo County farmers to apply for disaster crop insurance are fast approaching.

The implementation of Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments under the 2008 Farm Bill extended the deadlines to file insurance claims for growers of certain crops.

Payments for onions, honey and melons must be applied for by Dec. 1; growers of forage crops, fruit and nuts, excluding apples, have until Dec. 15.

The new bill also mandates that growers have federally approved crop insurance or be in the Non-insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program to be eligible for reimbursement.

“Everyone who has a crop they’re growing for commercial sale should be buying either crop insurance or (Non-insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program) coverage,” said Navdeep Dhillon, USDA Farm Service Agency program specialist in Davis.
