RCD president honored for service

San Mateo County Resource Conservation District President Rich Allen of Moss Beach was proclaimed Director of the Year at an annual conference of the California Association of RCDs in Riverside.

Out of roughly 600 RCD directors representing 103 branches statewide, Allen was singled out as the “director who has most demonstrated leadership and involvement in local conservation programs, community conservation education, and regional, state, and national conservation efforts,” according to a press release issued Monday. The award was given on Friday.

“I think it points to the work we’re doing in the RCD and how we’ve really turned this around,” Allen said. “It’s really cool that people are recognizing that.”

Allen, who has been with the district for six years, was elected president his first year with the goal of “rebuilding the board and coming up with a new strategy, mission and direction,” he said.

“Right now water is a critical issue in our area and the RCD is uniquely positioned to attack water quality and quantity issues,” Allen said. “It’s the right place, right time and we’ve got energetic people on the board.”

Among other achievements this year, Allen noted the formation of the Pilarcitos Watershed Group, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve Critical Coastal Area Pilot Project in Montara and Moss Beach, and the Circulation Study at Pillar Point Harbor.

“I don’t see this as a personal honor,” he said. “It’s an honor of our district.”
