The Half Moon Bay City Council will consider a resolution tonight to give a 3 percent pay raise to the city's executive staff

The cost-of-living raise would be applied to the directors of city departments, including the police chief, planning director, finance director and public works director. The city is currently using contract employees to fill the roles of finance and public works directors.

Each department head position already pays a salary of more than $120,000.

The proposal, which would codify the department heads as a distinct group of employees, comes to the City Council in the middle of a dire budget crisis. Executive staff is meeting regularly with the city manager to portion out $920,000 in cuts among the city departments. The city manager has said that those cuts could mean layoffs for city employees.

In her staff report concerning the pay increase proposal, City Manager Marcia Raines mentioned that the raise was planned in the city's original 2008-2009 budget. Other city staff received a similar 3 percent boost to their pay and benefits a few months ago.

The City Council meets at 7 tonight at the Ted Adcock Community / Senior Center, 535 Kelly Ave., Half Moon Bay.
