New grants assure help for dozens of child abuse victims

Family Service provides array of services in county

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 - 02:51:47 pm PST

Family Service Agency of San Mateo County, a nonprofit dedicated to helping struggling children, families and older adults improve their lives, announced Tuesday that it has received additional funding to fight the effects of child abuse.

The New York-based Avon Foundation and Mountain View’s Silicon Valley Community Foundation combined to provide $115,000 to assure the continuance of the agency’s Child Abuse Treatment Program for kids up to the age of 17. CHAT has already been granted $207,000 from the California Office of Emergency Services.

The CHAT Program aims to provide free, culturally sensitive therapy, information and referral to child victims of abuse and domestic violence. The bilingual program is intended to help fill the gaps in existing San Mateo County counseling services for children impacted by domestic violence.

As part of the CHAT Program grant, Family Service is providing individual and group therapy to at least 124 children at its San Mateo and Redwood City locations through September 2009. Additionally, the program is offering clients a variety of other services.

Common client issues include physical and sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment, exposure to domestic violence and other traumas. Referrals for the CHAT Program sometimes originate from family court.

“We’re grateful to both of these esteemed foundations for bolstering our capacity to improve the lives of child victims of abuse and domestic violence,” said Family Service President Laurie Wishard.
