The California Coastal Commission Wednesday approved a plan proposed by Montara Water and Sanitary District to ensure adequate fire protection on the Midcoast.

The plan will enable MWSD to pump 150 gallons of water per minute from the Alta Vista Well, as well as allow for “an additional 1.1 million gallons of water storage for emergencies and additional treatment for water drawn from wells at the Half Moon Bay Airport,” according to the press release issued after the meeting in Long Beach.

The plan, according to a Coastal Commission staff report, is designed to “ensure an adequate and reliable water supply” for fire protection purposes, not to “ease or lift the existing moratorium on new water service connections in Montara.”
