Half Moon Bay High School ended the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division “B” football season Friday with a 41-22 win over host Capuchino, Friday.

However, no one on the Half Moon Bay side was happy with how the game unfolded. Everyone agreed Half Moon Bay came up a little flat. One reason was Half Moon Bay was still recovering from the 49-33 loss to Sacred Heart Prep a week earlier

“That was our championship game,” said quarterback/defensive back Nick Moss. “To lose that game, all of the air in our balloon just popped.”

Another reason: the game was just another Friday afternoon contest played at a facility still under construction.

Though the field was playable, there were no stands along the middle of the field. Temporary stands were set up behind both end zones. One set of stands was filled.

Half Moon Bay twice had to overcome Mustang leads. The first time, Half Moon Bay overcame a 10-0 lead to score 21 straight points. Capuchino helped the cause, turning the ball over two times, setting up two of Half Moon Bay’s first three scores.

Capuchino scored late in the first half and scored early in the third to take a 22-21 lead.

The Cougars’ defense forced Capuchino’s third turnover as Chris Zmerzlikar and Max Marsall forced a fumble that Moss recovered. Thirty seconds later, Dominic Sena scored his second touchdown of the game.

A Mat Freels interception set up another score. Josh Dunne finished the drive with his third score of the game.

After Capuchino gave up the ball on a loss of downs, Sena finished the scoring with a 62-yard run, with 90 seconds left in the game. He rushed for 163 yards.

“Any win is a good win,” Sena said. “But we didn’t come out and we didn’t execute very well at the start. We have to fix things up for our next game.”

With their second-place finish, the Cougars host Burlingame at 6 p.m., Friday. The Panthers finished second in the PAL Ocean Division “A” League.

The frosh-soph defense came through as Half Moon Bay won that game, 28-26. The Cougars forced five turnovers and recorded four sacks. Half Moon Bay sealed the win with a goal-line stand late in the fourth quarter.

Jesus Huerta rushed for 83 yards and three scores. Wes Walters returned a kickoff for a score. It’s the team’s fourth kickoff return for a score.
