Authorities investigate death at Año Nuevo

From staff reports

Authorities found the body of a 49-year-old Santa Cruz woman Wednesday and believe she was involved in a spectacular crash near Año Nuevo a day earlier.

The California Highway Patrol and South Coast fire crews responded to a report of a crash at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a press release issued Thursday by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. At that time, officials found a vehicle that had apparently traveled over an embankment and onto the beach 100 feet below. The vehicle was hauled up onto the road and towed to a storage facility.

Then, on Wednesday, authorities combed through the car and found things that led the CHP to conclude someone was in the car at the time of the crash. Subsequently, Sheriff’s deputies, a CHP airplane and emergency crews returned to the scene to search. Shortly before noon, they found the body of Claire Edwina Braunhut. She was found about 150 feet from the crash site.

Anyone with information about what authorities are now calling a “suspicious circumstances death,” is asked to call Sheriff’s Office tip line at 1 (800) 547-2700.
