Among its many entertaining, autumnal and family activities, the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival, scheduled for Oct. 18 and 19 in Half Moon Bay, will include the Costume Contest for the 38th time. Full of costumes created by imaginative little boys and ghouls, the contest is planned for Saturday morning, Oct. 18, in the Half Moon Bay Library parking lot.
It will begin at 10 a.m., when contestants will start to gather in the lot. Judges will scrutinize the entrants and pick and announce winners and give awards between 10:45 and 11 a.m.

Overseeing the contest will be the Autumn Fairy Queen, also known as Lynn Ann Baumann of Half Moon Bay. Following in the tradition of Bill and Lynn Muth, the King and Queen of Hearts, Baumann has created the persona of the Autumn Fairy Queen for about five years.
She says she has seen a lot of creativity in the costumes over those years. She has seen a jellyfish made with an umbrella, a wall (which was carried by a child wearing leotards), a couple who dressed like ostriches and even a drawer (that child got a grand prize).
She has also seen large groups, of neighbors or co-workers, draw on their pooled imaginations: She recalls a bridal party of monsters, pirates of the Caribbean, characters from “The Wizard of Oz” and a family of lobsters.
She has tips for costume-builders: Be creative and stay in character. “Try to act the part you’re playing,” she said.
She said she welcomes local residents to be judges for the contest, but asks that they call her in advance.
Baumann can be reached at (650) 823-7671.
