Joseph Mitro, 72, died at 11:40 p.m. on September 9, 2008 at the Lotus Law Home (Hospice) in Moss Beach, after a very short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Private last rites were performed with his immediate family present. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial announcement at a later date in Kewanee, Ill., where he was born and raised.

Memorial donations may be sent to School of the Ozarks in Branson, Mo. in Joseph’s name.

Born in Kewanee, Ill. on October 16, 1935, he graduated from the School of the Ozarks High School in 1954.

Married to Sylvia Slock in Kewanee, Ill. on January 19, 1957.

Survivors are his wife, Sylvia, daughter Lisa Herlicy, San Francisco, son Mark Mitro, San Francisco, son-in-law Joseph Herlicy Sr., San Francisco, grandson Joseph Herlicy Jr., San Francisco (currently studying at St. Petersburg University in St. Petersburg, Russia for his master’s and doctorate degrees in international relations), brother-in-law Leonard Slock, Chama, N.M., brother Warren Mitro, Kewanee, Ill., several nephews and one niece, also of Kewanee, Ill.

Retired from Nurseryman’s Exchange in Half Moon Bay, he was an avid golfer and gardener. His family and friends grieve his loss and will miss him terribly.
