Classes added as sport gets more publicity

Call it Olympic afterglow.

No sooner is the torch extinguished from a Summer Olympiad than the sports that received a lot of TV time get popular.

That’s the case at Gymtowne Gymnastics in Moss Beach.

Business manager Kelly Young mans the phones, taking requests and passing along information to interested parents who see the sport as a way to get their kids active.

“We don’t want to turn anyone away,” Young said. “We want to accommodate everyone.”

This year, the school has three classes before lunch and added a few more classes for the evening.

“We get the older kids after they have seen the sport shown,” Young said.

However, it isn’t just the new kids who are excited about the sport.

Those who have been participating in the sport have their favorite moments of the now concluded games in Beijing.

“My favorite thing was seeing Shawn Johnson on the beam,” said 12-year-old Alyssa Bellamy of El Granada. “I loved how she did those three flips.”

Her sister Julia, 10, was a fan of American Nastia Liukin.

“She was awesome,” Julia Bellamy said.

As fate would have it, Gymtowne hosted a meet during the Olympics Games.

“That got me excited for our first meet,” said Kate Nelson, 9, of Montara.

Other sports featured in the Olympics are offered on the Coastside. However, it’s too early to determine if those sports have increased in numbers due to the Games.

Hope Atmore, a coach at the club, has seen the growth in participation and enthusiasm for many years.

She adds the Olympics is not the only reason why numbers increase.

“In the fall, parents try to decide to do for their kids,” Atmore said. “They want their kids to be active. The Olympics is a big help.”

At the same time, the Games offer a lasting impression.

“Seeing those gymnasts inspires me,” Bellamy said. “It shows me what it’s like at the next step.”

It’s safe to assume the next time gymnastics gets maximum play will be in four years, around the time of the 2012 Olympics in London.

“I wish the Olympics were every year,” Nelson said.

A new route to school

The morning commute just got better for some Coastside students, their parents and anyone else who must pass a local school in the way to work. SamTrans routes 17 and 294 have changed to make the bus ride more convenient for those at area schools.
