Picketers expected at Seton Coastside

Healthcare workers at Seton Medical Center Coastside in Moss Beach will go on a 24-hour strike beginning at 6 a.m., Thursday.

The strike extends to four other healthcare facilities in the state represented by SEIU United Healthcare Workers. The five facilities comprise all but one of Daughters of Charity Health System.

Thousands of workers at healthcare centers in Moss Beach, Daly City, Gilroy, San Jose and Los Angeles will be protesting what they consider unfair labor practices of management and will speak out for quality medical treatment, according to a media advisory released Wednesday.

SEIU represents the more than 2,400 caregivers and has been in negotiations with management since March for better work conditions.

"This contract shouldn't take this long to negotiate," union representative Colleen Fewer said. "(Management is) purposely delaying it."

Workers will march in picket lines at all five locations for the duration of the 24-hour period. In Moss Beach, an expected 120 protestors will picket around the hospital and perhaps on Highway 1 as well.

Seton Coastside has prepared for the strike by bringing in 60 "fully qualified replacement workers" from "lots of different sources" to ensure status quo patient care at the facility, according to Linde Cheema, vice president of human resources. All of the regular services, including the emergency room will be fully functional, she said.

"Patient care will be as usual," Cheema said.

Remember teddy bears past

This year, organizers of the Teddy Bear Clinic at Seton Medical Center Coastside plan to preserve the event for posterity by putting together a pamphlet full of personal memories over the event’s 21 years — and they invite Coastsiders to help.
