The Montara Water and Sanitary District held a public celebration to commemorate 50 years of service to the Coastside on Sunday at the Point Montara Lighthouse. The occasion also marked the fifth year of community ownership of water services.

“It was a nice community event,” MWSD President Paul Perkovic said. “We had a number of guests who all seemed to be having a good time.”

The event ran for three hours in the afternoon, supported by volunteers, and consisted of a large picnic-barbecue, informative poster board presentations of the district’s evolution, and a number of speeches given by various public officials acknowledging the district’s efforts and successes.

Audience members were comprised mainly of hungry and curious Coastsiders and district officials who mingled and discoursed on the organization’s merits.

The turnout was better than expected, Perkovic reported. “Originally we were looking to accommodate 75 to 100 people, but then they started responding on the Web site and it turned out to be more like 150 to 200 people, which was great.”

Geotechnical and hydrological consultants were spotted throughout the crowd addressing questions of community members concerning the direction of the district and its search for more water.

Though not in attendance, a number of leading state officials, including state Sen. Leland Yee, and California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, as well as U.S. Reps. Anna Eshoo and Jackie Speier, recognized the district’s anniversary.

In a crowning moment, Perkovic, on behalf of the district, declared Aug. 24, 2008, “Quentin L. Kopp Day” to honor the former legislator’s “instrumental” support of the district in its formative years.

“Everything worked out superbly,” Perkovic said. “I think it went extremely well.”

Remember teddy bears past

This year, organizers of the Teddy Bear Clinic at Seton Medical Center Coastside plan to preserve the event for posterity by putting together a pamphlet full of personal memories over the event’s 21 years — and they invite Coastsiders to help.
