From Kings Mountain to the Olympics

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Aug 20, 2008 - 01:01:30 pm PDT

Dawn Neisser just went from Kings Mountain to Mount Olympus.

The Kings Mountain resident went to Beijing and the 2008 Olympics, to see her niece pick up a silver medal.

The niece, Gina Miles, 34, of Creston, won an individual silver in 3-Day Eventing, a grueling equestrian event that includes dressage, cross-country and stadium jumping that took place Aug. 9 through 12.

Miles started with horses as a child at the Pony Club in Davis, where she grew up. She also got interested in eventing as a child. After seeing it on TV at the Los Angeles Olympics, “she said, ‘I want to do that!’” said Neisser.

Miles went on to show horses and to earn a degree in agricultural science at California Polytechnic University and now trains horses and teaches riding. At the Olympics, she rode “McKinlaigh,” whom Neisser called a “sport horse” born and raised in Ireland and owned by a Los Angeles couple.

She was awarded her medal on Aug. 12. Neisser, along with about 15 other relatives, was there to see her get it.

“Oh, my gosh, we were overwhelmed for her,” Neisser said. “She’s worked hard for this, and earned it all the way.”
