Minor quake centered near Half Moon Bay

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Aug 06, 2008 - 02:25:50 pm PDT

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a small earthquake last week — with an epicenter near Half Moon Bay. The USGS says the quake measured 2.0 on the Richter scale and was centered 13 miles south/southeast of Half Moon Bay. The quake occurred at 4:48 a.m. on July 30. Earthquakes below 3.0 are often not felt at all. Those measuring less than 2.0 are considered “microquakes.” A spokesman for the USGS says California experiences as many as 30 quakes that size a day and that it does little to pinpoint specifics on such temblors. Half Moon Bay Police Capt. Michael O’Malley said the department had no reports of anyone having felt the quake.
