Local nonprofits are encouraged to apply for the “Envirotoken” program. Qualifying programs will be placed on a ballot in the store. Throughout September, customers will be able to vote for the six organizations they would like New Leaf to support financially.
An Envirotoken worth 10 cents will be given to customers for each large bag they supply to carry their own groceries. Customers drop the tokens in the box of one of the six groups as they leave the store. At the end of each month, New Leaf counts the tokens, converts them to cash and sends the donations to the organizations.

In addition, organizers are planning for eight Community Days each year, when the markets will donate 5 percent of the day’s sales to a local nonprofit. New Leaf is now accepting applications from groups that would like to be beneficiaries. On Community Day, customers can learn more about the organizations’ missions and programs. Applicants must be Coastside nonprofits specializing in social justice, mental health, community outreach, agriculture, homeless assistance, health and wellness, the arts, children’s groups or women’s health.
Applications for both are available through August and can be found in a wall fixture to the front of the store.
The names of the beneficiaries will be announced in the fall. For information, call (831) 466-9060, ext. 126.
