Half Moon Bay native Chad Crittenden loves sports and made it to television's  "Survivor" - only one reason why his name is synonymous with survival. He will speak at this weekend's 24-hour Relay for Life.

Crittenden, who lost his lower right leg due to cancer, now gives motivational talks about the will and the way to survive. He will deliver one of those, gratis, at the lumenaria ceremony for cancer victims at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at Cunha Intermediate School.

The son of John Szabo who works at Sewer Authority Mid-coastside, Crittenden grew up locally and attended Half Moon Bay High School, where he took part in bowling, tennis, soccer, running, mountain biking and fishing. At the University of California, Davis, he majored in international relations with emphasis on world resources, the environment and Spanish. After college he taught in El Salvador where he met his wife, Dyann, and the couple and children Clara and Trevor settled in the Bay Area.

In 2002 he learned that a lump on the bottom of his right foot was Synovial Sarcoma, a rare and deadly cancer, which required the amputation. But within a year, he was back doing triathlons.

He is the only amputee to appear on "Survivor" (Survivor Vanuatu, Season 9.)

Relay co-organizer Russell Bissonnette is delighted he is coming back home to speak. "For a small-town event, this is pretty big," he said. "It will show that (cancer) can happen to anybody."
