Police interrupt chop-shop operation

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Jul 16, 2008 - 02:26:57 pm PDT

Three Oakland men suspected of chopping off car parts to resell to repair shops were arrested by police early Monday morning. Around 5 a.m., Half Moon Bay Police received multiple reports of men who were stealing catalytic converters off vehicles in the residential areas around Spruce Street. The suspects allegedly were using a power saw to quickly remove the car components and then load them into the back of a pickup truck. Police made contact with the truck containing the stolen property and the suspects. Two suspects were caught after attempting to flee the area. Catalytic converters have become an increasingly popular target for thieves because they contain increasingly expensive platinum.
