San Mateo County probation officials say they have heard from one of two 17-year-old boys who walked away from the minimum-security Camp Glenwood detention facility near La Honda Thursday.
Stew Peterson, assistant chief probation officer for San Mateo County, said Friday morning that one of the two nonviolent offenders called to say he would be turning himself in. The whereabouts of the other teenager was unknown.
Peterson said both boys were from Daly City and are presumed to be in that area now. He did not specify their crimes but said that the 50-60 boys at the camp at any given time typically have a long history with juvenile authorities who think the offenders would do well to escape the peer pressure of their own communities.
Camp Glenwood looks more like a "1960s-style elementary school" than a detention center, Peterson said. Located about three miles from La Honda, off of Highway 84, there are no bars or trappings typically associated with prisons. Peterson added said that detainees typically go through a six-month program that includes drug and alcohol counseling, athletic programs and other efforts designed to break the criminal cycle.
