Half Moon Bay High School pitcher Ryan Grennan didn’t make it out of the second inning the first time he pitched at Terra Nova in a game last month.

He made up for it Friday. In doing so, he helped clinch at least a tie for the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division title and put the Cougars one win away from getting the league’s automatic bid to the Central Coast Section playoffs.

Half Moon Bay’s 12-3 win over its Coastside rivals, combined with the Cougars’ 7-6 win over El Camino two days earlier, put Half Moon Bay alone in first at 10-4, 17-9 overall.

Spencer Waddell tripled and scored for Half Moon Bay in its 12-3 win over Terra Nova, Friday.

Half Moon Bay ends the season at Carlmont today. If Carlmont (9-5, 18-11) prevails, and Terra Nova (9-5, 17-12) beats Woodside, Half Moon Bay shares the league title with Carlmont and Terra Nova. Carlmont would get the automatic bid to the playoffs, based on a tie-breaker.

But, if Carlmont beats Half Moon Bay and Terra Nova falls to Woodside, Half Moon Bay and Carlmont share the league title, and Half Moon Bay earns the automatic bid over the Scots, having already won the season series.

It was for all those reasons that Half Moon Bay’s celebration Friday was subdued.

“We know Wednesday is another game,” Grennan said. “We have to play like we did today to have a chance to win.”

Terra Nova didn’t help its cause, committing three errors. One error in the second led to two runs. Two errors in the fourth helped Half Moon Bay score four runs. The Cougars scored a run in the third with a Gavin Long single, scoring Spencer Waddell.

The Tigers scored a run in the fourth and mounted a rally with one out and a runner on first. A double play ended the rally. The Cougars put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring four runs. Cody Silveria keyed the rally with a two-run single.

“I knew I had to do something in that at bat,” Silveria said. “No matter what, I was going to succeed.”

The Cougars trailed the whole game against El Camino. Down by two in the sixth, Half Moon Bay rallied for the win. The Cougars tied the score on a one-out, two-run single hit by Long. One out and two walks later, Evan Ross drilled a 1-1 pitch to center for the win.

“I was looking for a good pitch to hit,” Ross said. “I saw it and let it rip.”

Ross came up with the defensive play of the game in the seventh. Playing in left-center, the junior chased down a ball hit to right-center, sliding on his knees, catching the ball then hitting the wall. He ended the game catching a routine fly.

“At the beginning of the year, we knew we would be good,” Ross said. “We didn’t know how good we would be. We are all playing together.”
