A conservation easement on Toto Ranch, a 952-acre coastal property stretching down Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay, has been donated to the Peninsula Open Space Trust, the trust announced Wednesday.

Toto is currently owned by Kathleen Scutchfield, who bought the ranch with her late husband, Donald, in 1982. The land is valued at $7.9 million.

"I've seen how development has been creeping up and down the coast and feel it's important to make a statement and save this land just as it is, in its open, natural state," Scutchfield said in the statement. "POST has done so much to preserve the character of the Coastside, and I want to see that this beautiful land is protected forever."

The easement specifically protects five acres of agricultural soils, as well as watersheds from Tunitas Creek. The property is a habitat for a number of protected and endangered species, such as the California red-legged frog, peregrine falcons and marbled murrelets.

If Scutchfield ever sells the land, the easement will go to the new owner.

Coastside family seeks donations of rare blood type

Coastside couple Larry and Shirley Gurnett are praying for their 18-year-old nephew, Travis Zacarius, who is due shortly for open-heart surgery. They are also hoping for some good Samaritans in the form of donors whose blood matches Travis’ rare blood type.
