Lantos dies in Washington following battle with cancer

U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos, who has represented the coast and all of District 12 for 27 years, died Monday morning due to complications from cancer. He leaves behind his wife, two daughters, 18 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a legacy of congressional service few will ever match.

Lantos was first elected to Congress in 1980 and was serving his 14th term when he died at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. He was 80 years old.

In December, Lantos said he was being treated for esophageal cancer and on Jan. 2 he announced he would not seek another term in the House of Representatives. Lantos was the only survivor of the Holocaust ever to serve in Congress. He was chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and a senior member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

No public memorial had been set as of Monday morning, according to Lantos' congressional office.
