Retailers don't fall for tobacco sting

San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies enlisted the help of a 15-year-old student in a "tobacco decoy operation" staged in unincorporated portions of the Coastside Dec. 18. The teen went to 13 businesses attempting to buy tobacco and was turned away each time. Statewide a recent sting proved that more than 12 percent of businesses typically sell tobacco illegally to underage shoppers. One reason why locals fared better may be that all the businesses were contacted prior to the operation, reminded of the law and warned of future sting operations.
