Half Moon Bay Police participated in a DUI checkpoint on southbound Highway 1, near B.K. Motors Thursday night. Capt. Michael O'Malley considered the effort a success, but "No DUIs," he said. "Sometimes it's feast or famine."
Instead, police gave citations to eight people, mostly for driving without a license. In most of the cases, the car was towed. One driver was caught driving with a suspended license, using false plates and having marijuana.

LCP delayed until March
The California Coastal Commission has postponed its hearing for the Midcoast's Local Coastal Program until March, a representative said this week.
The LCP is the overarching plan that keeps the Midcoast in compliance with the Coastal Act, particularly with regard to development and the environment. The document has been under review for most of 2007, with a hearing on the proposed amendments originally scheduled for December.
"We're behind schedule," said Ruby Pap, a program analyst for the Coastal Commission. "The items that we're focusing on that take the most time to evaluate are the infrastructure - water, traffic and wastewater disposal."
Pap said she now expects the LCP to reach the commission in early spring.
Don't put that grease down the drain
The Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside reminds you that the byproducts of all that holiday cooking can lead to big trouble for your plumbing.
In a release issued before Christmas (and offered here in time for New Year's dinners), SAM noted that over time fats, oils and grease can build up and block your pipes. During the holiday season, more grease makes its way into the sewer system than at any other time of the year.
Data gathered by sanitary sewer agencies in the region indicate, on average, one in 60 homes is affected by a blockage in their plumbing or the main lines of the public sewer system every year. Besides the mess, overflows require expensive cleanup, can cause health hazards and threaten the environment.
SAM recommends home chefs not put dairy products or fat into the garbage disposal or drain, that they freeze such things instead and deposit them in the trash. In addition, you can mix cooking oils with absorbent material - like coffee grounds before putting it in the trash. If you have large quantities of used oil, call a hazardous waste collection facility or the Montara Water and Sanitary District for advice.
Need more prodding? SAM notes that property owners are responsible for the proper maintenance of private sewer laterals. That means that homeowners bear the brunt of the expenses associated with a clogged lateral. SAM officials suggest scheduling an inspection with a reputable licensed service professional at least every three to five years.
