And that means the Unknown Motorcycle Club is revving up for its annual collection drive for gifts for needy Coastside kids. This is the 25th year the Coastside-based motorcycle club has done the collection, which culminates in its toy run when the bikers take the goodies to Coastside Hope, for distribution through its Adopt-a-Family program. What the club is looking for are toys, including educational toys, and educational supplies, for children and youth "as long as they are living on the coast," said Jim Holsman, owner of Coastside Technical Services and the club's current president. The club plans to set up marked collection boxes around Thanksgiving, at Coastside post offices between Half Moon Bay and Montara, at the American Legion Post 474 at 470 Capistrano Road in Princeton and at Sea Crest School at 901 Arnold Way in Half Moon Bay. Toys collected there will go to the Adopt-a-Family program, which every year fills the wish lists of low-income Coastside families. The deadline for collecting the toys and educational gifts is Dec. 8, and items donated or collected after that date will be stored up to begin next year's toy run. That is also the date of the club's poker ride, a good-natured activity which is open to anyone who rides a motorcycle, Holsman said. The way it works is this: participants meet at 10 a.m. at the American Legion in Princeton and each will put $5 into a pool which enables them to buy hands of cards. They will then go on a "poker ride" that takes in five stops on the Coastside. At each stop, each participant picks up a playing card. At the end of the ride, the participant with the best poker hand wins one-half of the cash in the pool. The other half goes to cover expenses. For information, contact Holsman at 712-0100. |
