Rescue swimmers from the Pillar Point Harbor District, California State Parks and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office recovered a body trapped in a narrow inlet north of Montara State Beach on Sunday.

Hikers spotted the body at around 1 p.m. Thursday, said Sheriff's Lt. Lisa Williams, but high surf and dangerous wind conditions kept rescuers out of the water. The inlet is located at the base of a long and unstable series of cliffs.

The body had not been identified as of Monday morning, said an official with the San Mateo County Coroners Office, who said the body is "still listed as a John Doe."
