{ What if you're not under the spell? }

If you'd prefer to avoid mobs in bookstores when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" comes out, you can.

But even if you go to the local library you are likely to get caught up in the excitement.

The Half Moon Bay Library had to hoard copies of the Potter book for checkout, available July 21. As of the middle of last week, said new branch manager Annie Malley, there were 385 holds for those books. The first one was placed back in February.

Recently, the library held Potter-style crafts programs for kids: wand-making on July 7 and owl-making on July 14. In the vestibule is a jar of "Bertie Botts' Beans" (jelly beans) for a contest. The child who guesses the correct number of beans will win a complete set of Harry Potter books and the jar.

The second-place winner gets a copy of the book, and the third-place winner gets a smaller portion of jelly beans.

Malley said she was pulled into Pottermania by her niece who, at 8, read the first Potter novel in a day.

Now she and her husband read Potter stories to their 8-year-old son - at least until evil villain Lord Voldemort comes onto the scene. "When Voldemort comes in, we have to stop," she said.

For the few young readers who have not fallen under the Potter spell, Moon News Bookstore owner Mark Sipowicz offers some alternatives.

Try "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis, "Bridge to Terabithia" by Katherine Paterson, Philip Pullman's "Dark Materials" series, the Lemony Snicket "Series of Unfortunate Events," or the Eragon fantasies by Christopher Paolini.
