It's Pumpkin Festival time again ... at least for graphic artists

It's a little early to be thinking about pumpkins and Halloween and October's monster Pumpkin Festival in Half Moon Bay - unless you're a graphic artist.

If you are, it's time right now to think about the festival.

The Main Street Beautification Committee and the Coastal Arts League announce the second annual Poster Design Contest. All interested parties, particularly art students, graphic artists, professional artists and graphic designers, are welcome to vie for the high-profile chance to have their work become part of the promotional poster for the 2008 Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival.

"This is a call for art from graphic artists to create the promotional poster" for next year's festival, said Shirley Kellicutt, CAL member and contest chair.

The goal of the poster, and what the contest is looking for, she said, is "art that will communicate what the festival is all about."

This year's festival, the 38th annual Pumpkin Festival, will take place Oct. 13 and 14 on Main Street in Half Moon Bay. During this year's festival, accepted entries for the 2008 show will be on display as part of a special show during the month of October.

The contest is open specifically to professional artists and designers due to the detailed production specifications required. The artwork must be placed on files that are vector-based, and submitted via EPS or PDF format, in CMYK, said Kellicutt.

A cash award of $1,000 will go to the first-place winner. The second-place winner will receive $500, the third-place winner gets $250 and there will be an award of $125 for both the fourth- and fifth-place winners.

There will also be a $100 "People's Choice" award.

Last year's inaugural contest drew more than 50 entries from several states.

"The quality of work and number of entries exceeded our expectations," said Kellicutt.

She added that more than 500 people visited the Coastal Arts League Gallery during the 2006 Pumpkin Festival to cast their votes for the People's Choice award.

The submission deadline for the poster contest is Sept. 15. Contest details, guidelines and entry forms are available online at either www.coastalartsleague.com or at www.miramarevents.com.
