Veterinarian clarifies: Fever, not virus, could be caused by vaccination

Veterinarians Wednesday asked the Review to clarify earlier comments as to the cause of a virus outbreak among horses on the Midcoast. There appears to be widespread agreement that the Equine Herpes Virus outbreak was not caused by vaccination.

The confusion stems from a March 20 e-mail from Bayhill Equine veterinarian Dr. Wayne Browning. In the e-mail discussing the outbreak, he wrote that "the fevers could have been caused by vaccination on the premises where there had been no cases, or from the immunoboosters (Zylexis) given at the ranches with exposure." The e-mail was posted on the San Mateo County Farm Bureau Web site and Farm Bureau Executive Secretary Jack Olsen referred to it when asked about the cause of the virus.

A meeting on the outbreak is set for 7 p.m. tonight, March 21, at the Mounted Patrol Grounds, 521 Kings Mountain Road in Woodside
