170 fish found dead near Pescadero Creek

Officials report that following the breach of the Pescadero Creek sandbar this weekend, scores of juvenile steelhead trout have again been found dead.

Joanne Kerbavaz of California State Parks reported that the bodies of 170 fish were counted, mostly between six and eight inches in length.

Additionally, a set of "bladder dams," installed by the California Department of Fish and Game and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Restoration Center as part of a water-quality experiment, washed away.

Many local fishermen believe that the dams could have prevented the fish kill, by holding back anoxic water. Among agency scientists, however, the link remains controversial.
