But when you look at the artwork and photographs of Half Moon Bay artist Bonnie Joy Sedlak, they've taken flight.
"I wanted to show the beauty of the bird," she said, "and also to capture it in its environment."

These photos capture mostly Coastside birds in flight: hawks, egrets, herons, pelicans and shore birds. They share gallery space with baylands birds - specifically, from the Palo Alto area.
Just because she paints with watercolors, Sedlak is no stranger to a camera. When she was 13, her parents gave her a 35mm Canon SLR camera. For decades, she used it to shoot landscapes in travels to Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan and throughout the United States.
A member of the Audubon Society, she says it was while taking strolls that she became aware of birds.
"It mostly comes from just walking and enjoying birds," she said. "I just started noticing birds, and was always walking with a camera."
At Vibrantz, she has seven framed photographs on display, along with more than 20 eight-by-10 prints mounted in mattes.
Sedlak will be at Vibrantz Saturday evening to discuss her work with art lovers during the Third Saturday Art Walk, in which several Half Moon Bay art galleries, and one in Miramar, stay open late.
