If you build it, they will play

In the style of an old-fashioned barn raising, a cadre of volunteers is planning to erect a deluxe park in Moss Beach.

But they have to finish raising the funds to build it, first.

So, the Moss Beach Park Renovation Project plans to hold a fund-raising gala next Thursday evening, Sept. 9, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at Mezza Luna Restaurant, located at 459 Prospect Way in Princeton.

It's an affair for which guests ought to consider "dressing swanky," said fund-raising coordinator Stephen Miller.

The evening will feature a four-course dinner a la Mezza Luna, complete with wine from the Bonny Doon vineyard. Performing at the dinner will be six-piece swing string band the Tom Cats, the latest incarnation of the Chazz Cats.

Lessons in swing dancing will be given, followed by dancing into the night. There's also a silent auction with wine and services donated from local businesses, on the block.

It's all just down the road from the park, in a spacious lot at the corner of Virginia Avenue and Highway 1 in Moss Beach. For years, a park of sorts had existed there with improvised play structures. But now, builders are getting serious.

In a yearlong process, the renovation project retained Ithaca, N.Y.-based Leathers and Associates custom community park designers, which has provided plans for more than 1,600 parks over 30-plus years. Their secret: Involve the whole community, including its children, in the planning.

"They used it as inspiration, for their design," said Miller.

Following Leathers' plan, the park's first phase - the kids' play area will be built between Sept. 29 and Oct. 3, by scores of community volunteers.

So far, through donations and volunteer efforts, the project has raised $95,000, with $45,000 still needed to meet the target $140,000 for the first phase, Miller said.

The second phase - resurfacing the basketball court, installing permanent bathrooms, and landscaping - should run around $30,000, said project co-coordinator Mary Kate Meyerhoffer.

Tickets for the fund-raiser are $125 per person, of which $90 per ticket will go to the park and the rest to cover event costs, said Miller.

To donate toward the park, visit the project's Web site at www.mossbeachpark.com or send donations to Coastside Preservation and Recreation, P.O. Box 941, Moss Beach, CA 94038. For information, call Miller at 563-9345.
